Read full description of the books:
My Grams recently passed away, and this book made me think of her. When I would go to her house as a kid, the first thing I would do was beeline over to the bookshelves - on the shelf that was eye-level for the kids, she had collections of famous stories: Mother Goose, Hans Christian Anderson, Brothers Grimm, Aesop’s Fables, all the famous old storytellers. I’m not sure if these were things she enjoyed herself, or if she just though it was something important to have around the house for the grandkids, but I LOVED sitting in the corner reading those books. She also had tapes of some show (maybe on PBS?) where they acted out original fairy tales and folk tales like The Little Mermaid and John Henry. I remember us watching those and discussing the similarities and differences to the Disney versions of each story. When I was in Barnes & Noble years ago, I found this book, and another similar one with the stories of Brothers Grimm, and figured, like Grams did, that it would be good to have these classics on my bookshelf. With her passing, I felt compelled this year to ACTUALLY read them, so I’m going to try for one story each evening...we’ll see if I’m motivated to keep it up :)
**Disclaimer: DO NOT read this book to children! This is a volume for adults only. There’s a reason many of these stories did not withstand the test of time. I’ve read 5 stories of the 100 so far, and 3 of them were DEEPLY disturbing. The things people used to tell kids to get them to behave...yikes!

Read information about the authorHans Christian Andersen (often referred to in Scandinavia as H. C. Andersen; April 2, 1805 – August 4, 1875) was a Danish author and poet. Although a prolific writer of plays, travelogues, novels, and poems, Andersen is best remembered for his fairy tales. Andersen's popularity is not limited to children; his stories—called eventyr, or "fairy-tales"—express themes that transcend age and nationality.
Andersen's fairy tales, which have been translated into more than 125 languages, have become culturally embedded in the West's collective consciousness, readily accessible to children, but presenting lessons of virtue and resilience in the face of adversity for mature readers as well. Some of his most famous fairy tales include "The Little Mermaid", "The Ugly Duckling", "The Nightingale", "The Emperor's New Clothes" and many more. His stories have inspired plays, ballets, and both live-action and animated films.
